Your body consists of nearly 80 different organs, all of which are necessary for the proper functioning of your body. The organs we hear about the most are the brain, heart, kidneys, liver, and lungs. These are widely known as the five vital organs in the body.
Contrary to popular belief, the liver is the largest solid organ in the body and is responsible for more than 500 different functions and processes in the body. A healthy liver ensures the rest of your organs work properly throughout the day.
What Does the Liver Do for the Body?
The liver is located in the upper right quadrant of your abdomen -- above the stomach and below the diaphragm. About the size of a football, it is made up of four compartments, known as the left lobe, right lobe, caudate lobe, and quadrate lobe. The right lobe is the largest of the four lobes, with the left lobe being the second-largest.
Of all the things your liver is responsible for, there are three major roles it will play in your day-to-day health -- blood detoxification, bile production, and energy production.
- Blood Detoxification - the liver plays a large role in removing toxins from your blood. It’ll actually decide which nutrients to process, which to store, which to excrete, and which to keep in the blood.
 - Bile Production - the liver produces a substance called bile, which is necessary for breaking down the food we eat into processed nutrients the body can utilize. It’ll largely help the breakdown of fats and will be stored in the gallbladder after being released by the liver.
 - Energy Metabolism - depending on what your body needs, the liver will either convert glucose to glycogen (energy storage) or convert glycogen to glucose (energy production).

Outside of those three main responsibilities, the liver also plays a role in regulating cholesterol, blood clotting, breaking down medication, enhancing the immune system, breaking down red blood cells, and lowering blood sugar by storing it as glycogen.
In fact, the liver is able to regenerate itself after having as much as ⅔ of the liver removed during surgery. This will occur as much as 12 times, with the liver regenerating itself each time.
